About SPES

SPES is the acronym for the Society for the Promotion of Eriugenian Studies; the Society was 50 years old in 2020. The initial idea to found SPES was born at a conference organized by John O’Meara and Ludwig Bieler at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin in 1970. SPES has been active ever since in developing Eriugenian studies at high scholarly level by hosting international colloquia and publishing the proceedings. In keeping with the times we live in, web resources and links will be listed on our website resources page. In this way, our website aims to be a valuable resource for Eriugena scholars. Interested parties are cordially invited to send links to new publications related to Eriugena or his times. The website will replace the now obsolete Bulletin started by the late James McEvoy. (You can read some of these in the site sidebar).
